Abstract

A thioxotropic lubricating oil composition for coating air filters comprises a mineral lubricating oil together with, by weight based on the total composition, 0.5 to 3 per cent of a water-resistant aminated oleophilic clay treated with a phosphorus-containing acid, 0.5 to 2 per cent of an alkylene glycol or ether thereof and 0.5 to 5 per cent of an oil-soluble adhesive polymeric compound. The oil can be derived from paraffinic, naphthenic, asphaltic or mixed crude petroleum stocks ranging in viscosity and boiling range from the gas oil to heavy lube oil and having a low or high viscosity index. The clay can be any suitable colloidal clay such as bentonites or Hectorite or a synthetic clay. It can be treated with the acid and then the amino-compound. Suitable aminating agents include surface-active amino compounds such as aliphatic amines of at least 10 carbon atoms, salts of such amines with organic or inorganic acids and quaternary ammonium compounds and acrolein - ammonia or epichlorhydrinammonia condensation products wherein the amino groups may be wholly or partially converted to amido by reaction with carboxylic acids. The phosphorus acid may be inorganic or organic. A large number of aminating agents and phosphorus acids is given. In examples of preparing the clay, Hectorite clay was dispersed in water to give a hydrosol, allowed to settle and the sol decanted off. It was acidified with phosphoric acid and treated with (1) dimethyldiheptadecyl ammonium chloride; (2) epichlorhydrin - ammonia condensation product; (3) a condensation product of 5 mols. ammonia with 1 mol. epichlorhydrin wherein 1/3 of the amine groups were converted to amide by reaction with tallow fatty acids; (4) as in (3) using a mixture of C14-C18 saturated fatty acids instead of the tallow acids. Glycols and ethers which can be used include ethylene, propylene and hexylene glycols, ethylene glycol-monoethyl, -monobutyl, -mono-(1-ethylbutyl) and -monophenyl ethers and diethylene glycol-monomethyl, -monoethyl, -monobutyl and -monophenyl ethers. The polymers may be hydrocarbon polymers of C2-C12 olefines, including polyethylene, polybutene, natural rubber and copolymers of styrene with alkenes. The molecular weight may be between 10,000 and 500,000. In exemplary compositions, (a) 1.3 per cent of a Hectorite clay (treated as in (4) above), 1.0 per cent of hexylene glycol and 2,0 per cent of a polybutene (M.W. 20,000) were composited with a mineral oil of viscosity 400 S.S.U. at 100 DEG F.; (b) as in (a), the clay being replaced by 1.3 per cent of a Hectorite clay (treated as in (3) above); (c) as in (a), using 1.4 per cent of the clay and (d) as in (a), replacing the clay with 1.4 per cent of a Hectorite clay (treated as in (2) above).
