Abstract

814,208. Wafer-baking machines. SCRIBBANS-KEMP Ltd. Oct. 2, 1957 [Sept. 7, 1956], No. 27419/56. Class 28 (1). A wafer-baking machine consists of a series of pairs of hinged plates, carried on an endless chain, which are automatically closed together after receiving batter and then pass through an oven, after which they are opened and the wafers are positively lifted by suction and deposited either in a stack or on a conveyer. Fig. 1 shows a pair of wafer baking plates 1 travelling towards a discharge position at which a wafer is being removed from a preceding plate la by a suction device 2 to which suction is applied through a flexible conduit 4 connected to the hollow piston-rod 4a. Suction device 2 is reciprocated by a pneumatic cylinder 3 supported by two pairs of pivoted arms 5, 6, reciprocated with device 2 and cylinder 3 by a further pneumatic cylinder 7 operating through a connecting rod 8 and a link arm 9 acting on a shaft 11 on which arms 6 are mounted. In the retracted position, dotted lines, Fig. 1, suction device 2 is located over shoot 12 when a bellcrank lever 14 pivoted at 15 and actuated by link 16 pivoted at 17 on rod 6 actuates valve 13 to release the suction and deposit the wafer in shoot 12. In operation, cylinder 7 is energized to move arms 5, 6 to the full line position, Fig. 1, after which cylinder 3 is energized causing the suction device 2 to move forward and lift the wafer. Cylinder 18 is then energized, causing shaft 19 on which arms 5 are mounted to travel along the slot 21 cut into carrier 22, raising suction device 2 from plate 15 when cylinders 3 and 7 operate in the reverse direction to withdraw device 2 and move arms 5, 6 to the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1. Fingers 29, 29a, Fig. 4, pivoted at 30, 30a, to plate 1 are linked to the hinge so that they are retracted as the plates open, having held the wafer on the plate as the plates begin to open.
