Abstract
814,109. Rolling tubes. WELLMAN SMITH OWEN ENGINEERING CORPORATION Ltd. Nov. 8, 1957 [Sept. 7, 1956], No. 27523/56. Class 83 (4). A method of making metal tubes comprises reducing a hollow blank on a first mandrel by a skew rolling operation which also transfers the rolled blank to a second mandrel which is then fed to a pilger mill for a further reduction. A hollow blank 14 is fed from a furnace 10 by way of a discharging bed or overhead conveyer to a table 21 from which it is fed to a position 20 in front of a ram-operated mandrel 18 which pushes it into the pass between skew rolls 17. After reduction and elongation the blank is fed on to a smaller mandrel 22 coaxial with mandrel 18 on the discharge side of the rolls. The mandrel 22, with the blank, is then transferred by way of feed table 26 to a pilger mill 24.
