Abstract
In a one-stage process for treating textiles with ionic surface-active treating agents, e.g. when washing with soap, followed by rinsing, the treatment bath contains a sequestering agent and a dispersing agent which can disperse insoluble compounds formed by hardness-causing ions but does not itself form insoluble metal compounds, in such amount that insoluble compounds formed during the rinsing step are kept in dispersion. The sequestering agent may be an alkali salt of nitrilotriacetic or ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid, an alkali hexametaphosphate or tripolyphosphate or hexasodium tetra-polyphosphate. The dispersing agent may be a polyglycol ether, a water-soluble adduct of a polyethylene or polypropylene oxide, and a fatty acid, resin acid, fatty alcohol, fatty amine, fatty acid amide, alkylphenol or alkylnaphthol; polyvinylpyrrolidone, polyvinyl alcohol, a polyacrylate, polystyrene sulphonate, an alkali salt of a styrene-maleic acid copolymer, or a highly sulphonated derivative of an unsaturated fatty acid such as is described in Specification 297,124, [Class 2 (ii)], or of a hydroxy fatty acid, which derivative may contain sulphonic acid groups and sulphuric acid ester groups. A washing bath may also include a bleaching agent, optical brightener, sodium cellulose-glycollate, trisodium phosphate, soda or sodium silicate and the process may also be applied to fulling, bleaching, boiling, degumming and soaping of dyeings. In examples: (1) textiles are washed in a bath containing soap, hexasodium tripolyphosphate, and an ethylene oxide-sperm oil alcohol condensate; (2) a fulling liquid comprises oleylmethylsarcosin sodium salt, tetrasodium salt of ethylene diamine-tetra-acetic acid and the reaction product of C12-alkyl phenol with ethylene oxide; (7) a bucking liquor for the decoction of raw wool comprises caustic soda, resin soap, sodium nitrilotriacetate and a propylene oxide-ethylene oxide reaction product.
