Abstract

813,345. Engine charges; systems of working. HERWIG, O. June 8, 1956 [July 12, 1955], No. 17750/56. Class 7(2) [Also in Group XII] Synthesis gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen is produced by partial combustion of a hydro-carbon, e.g. methane, with oxygen or oxygen-containing gases in an internal-combustion engine, e.g. a gas engine, which simultaneously produces mechanical power, the reactant mixture of hydro-carbon and oxygen or oxygen-containing gases having an oxygen content lower than 39 per cent and being ignited by the controlled injection of an igniting medium, e.g. an igniting oil, hydrogen peroxide, methanol or acetaldehyde, and the compression ratio being at least that normally employed in compression ignition engines. The quantity of igniting medium employed may be varied depending on the engine load and anti-knock substances, e.g. carbon di-oxide or lead tetraethyl, may be added to the reactant mixture. An electrical igniting system may be provided for supplementary use.
