Abstract

812,877. Radio direction finding. DECCA RECORD CO. Ltd. Oct. 7, 1957 [July 10, 1957], No. 21913/57. Class 40 (7). A radar apparatus of the type that uses an aerial which both scans in azimuth and node has a time-varied gain control adjusted in synchronism with the elevation of the aerial so that a reduced response to ground-clutter without loss of shortrange cover on high-flying targets is obtained. One possible form of gain/range characteristic is shown in Fig. 3 and it is seen that at low aerial elevations the gain is reduced from the maximum over a certain range, indicated by the full line, while at higher aerial elevations the range over which the gain is reduced is smaller, the gain characteristic at one such higher elevation being illustrated by the dotted line. The variation in gain with elevation and with range may be performed in steps or continuously and the maximum gain may be either at maximum elevation or below this point. In locations where the ground-clutter is unevenly distributed the gain may be further varied with the bearing of the aerial and in another embodiment the gain is reduced in accordance with the amplitude of the signals received during an immediately preceding period.
