Abstract

Diolefins are polymerized by bringing them in contact with a catalyst formed by mixing at least one compound of a metal of Groups IVa, Va and VIa of the Periodic Table with at least one aluminium compound of the general formula R1R2AlX, where R1 and R2 are similar or dissimilar and each represents a hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical and X represents a halogen atom, an alkyloxy group or an aryloxy group or the residue or a secondary amine or amide, mercaptan, thiophenol, carboxylic acid or sulphonic acid, with the proviso that if an aluminium compound of the general formula R1R2Al Hal is used the metals of Group IV to VI of the Periodic Table may be replaced by nickel, cobalt, platinum or manganese. Preferred catalysts are obtained by mixing either (i) aluminium triethyl or aluminium triisobutyl with titanium tetrachloride, or (ii) aluminium diethyl monochloride in each case in iso-octane. Polymerization may be effected at substantially atmospheric pressure at room temperature. The diolefines which may be polymerized are 1.3 butadiene, isoprene, 2,3 dimethyl butadiene, piperylenes 2-methyl pentadiene, 3-methyl pentadiene, 3-phenyl butadiene, 3-furyl butadiene, 2,4 - hexadiene, 3 - methoxybutadiene, chloroprene, bromoprene and methyl chloroprene, and these may be copolymerized with ethylene, propene, butene, 1-pentene, styrene, or a -methyl styrene. The slurry containing the polymer may be washed with an organic solvent or with an aqueous solution of a detergent as described in Specification 801,554.
