Abstract

Polymeric surface-active materials are made by reacting at a temperature below 60 DEG C. acrylic or methacrylic acid or a C1-C10 alkyl ester thereof, acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile with sulphur dioxide and methyl ethyl ketone peroxide or an organic hydroperoxide such as tert.-butyl hydroperoxide, cumene hydroperoxide, diisopropyl benzene hydroperoxide, tert.-butyl isopropylbenzene hydroperoxide and para-menthane hydroperoxide. Alkyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic esters specified are methyl acrylate and methacrylate and ethyl, butyl and 2-ethylhexyl acrylates. The reaction may be carried out in the presence or absence of solvents such as methanol or acetone and the sulphur dioxide may be in liquid or gaseous form. In preferred procedures the monomer is first mixed either with the sulphur dioxide or peroxy compound and the other reactant is then added gradually. The products, which are viscous oils or gums, are acidic and may be neutralized with alkalies such as potassium, sodium or barium hydroxide or ammonia. The products, either in neutralized or unneutralized form, may be used as emulsifiers in the aqueous emulsion polymerization of monomers such as vinyl acetate or methyl acrylate with the aid of potassium persulphate as a catalyst, part of the monomeric material being added gradually as polymerization proceeds.
