Abstract
811,640. Electric motor driving arrangements. ROTORK ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Feb. 1, 1957 [March 5, 1956], No. 6860/56. Class 35. [Also in Group XXIX] A two-part casing 10. houses a driving unit 13 comprising a reversible electric motor 14 and worm reduction gear, the motor having a horizontal shaft 30 which drives a vertical output shaft 16 through the reduction gear, the shaft 16 terminating in forks 18 that engage the spokes of a stop or gate valve operating wheel. The casing is supported by a column 25 which is adjustably clamped upon one of the pipes leading to the valve casing and the unit 13 is mounted within the casing 10 so that it is free to swing about the shaft 16. The motor 14 is provided with a speed governor 39, which alternatively may be included in the drive; in the latter case the governor may be replaced by a slipping clutch. Any resistance encountered by the motor in closing the valve will cause a reaction in the unit 13 tending to turn it in the opposite direction; this reaction is controlled by a spring 42 connected between a bracket 36 under the motor 14 and an adjusting screw in the casing. When the valve is closed or an obstruction occurs the reaction increases and turns the unit 13 against the spring 42 until a micro-switch 51 on the bracket 36 contacts a fixed pillar 49 in the casing and de-energizes the motor. The coupling between the shaft 16 and forks 18 includes a manually adjustable coupling which either provides for direct connection therebetween or for one revolution of lost motion so that the momentum built up by the driving unit 13 ensures the valve is loosened prior to being opened. The motor is switched off when the valve is opened by a micro-switch on the gear-box actuated by a cam 62 driven through a clock-type reduction gear 63, 64, 65 and 67 from the forks 18 by a clip 69 and a spindle 68 passing inside the shaft 16. The valve may be manually operated upon disconnecting the manually adjustable coupling. Additional switches 51, only one of which is shown, and another spring 42 may be provided so that the safety cut-out functions in both directions of valve travel.
