Abstract

811,613. Wire-heating furnaces. ROSAZ, F. M. July 19, 1957 [July 20, 1956], No. 22985/57. Class 51 (2). A furnace for continuously heating wire prior to a forging operation comprises a refractory lined casing 1, a drum 13 having a shaft 14 journalled in a fixed bearing 15 and a suspended bearing 16, and burners 4-7 with fuel pipes 8 and 9 and air pipes 10 and 11. Compressed air is supplied by a blower 12 which also provides the bearing 15 with cooling air through a pipe 41. The drum, which has a taper of about 1.5 per cent, is driven by a motor 23 through speed control means 24, pulleys 25, 26 and belts 27, reduction gearing 28 and gears 29, 30. The speed control means 24 is of the infinitely variable type operated by a reversible motor 32 through chain and sprocket gearing acting on the gear 31. Wire is introduced through a cat-trap 18 near the bottom of the wider end of the drum, and is withdrawn through a cat-trap 20. A spring-pressed bar 45 bears against the drum at the inlet end to guide the incoming wire away from the end of said drum. Initially, the wire is drawn into the heated furnace through the inlet and its bent end is hooked into a hole 57 registering with the outlet, and the drum is rotated slowly until a sufficient number of turns is wound on to it. It is then stopped with the hole 57 near the outlet, the free end of the wire being drawn therethrough. During operation the turns of wire on the drum expand and tend to move by gravity away from one another towards the smaller end of the drum.
