COPPER TREATING FURNACE Filed Aug. 13, 1952 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor flllorney Patented Feb. 7, 1933,
PATENT orrlca WILLIS J. BENSON, F DOUGLAS, ARIZONA corrnn TREATING spanner:
Application filed August 13, 1932. SerialNo. 628,754.
This invention relates to furnaces for treating copper, and has particular reference to that type of furnace embodying the subject matter of Patent Number 1,859,727.
In accordance with the present invention, improved means for forcing mixed air and steam into the copper Contents of the furnace whereby, one side of the furnace may be in operation while the other side is idle'with the result that if one side, that is, the side in operation, burns out, the other side, that is, the inactive side, or side not in operation, builds up so that first one side and then the other side of the furnace may be brought into 5 operation.
The present invention together with its numerous objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the ac-.
companying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of theapparatus.
Figure 2 is an end elevational view thereof. Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional View 25 through the furnace.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view through the furnace.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, it will be seen that there are provided op- 0 posed pairs of relatively spaced short stand ards 5 on which are mounted flanged rollers 6 serving to support the furnace which is generally designated by the reference charac ter 7.
8 provided with a filling opening 9 therein, and being also provided with end plates 10,
11, secured to the flanged ends 12 of the shell.
8 by bolts 13. Adjacent each end of the shell 8 there is a circumferentially extending rib 14 engaging a pair of rollers 6 as shown.
At the end of the furnace adjacent to plate 11, there is provided a ring gear 15 that is r continually in mesh with a pinion 16 on a drive shaft 17 suitably supported as suggested in the drawings and havingsuitable connections with a source of power (not shown).
Suitably supported on opposite sides of r the shell 8 exteriorly of the latter, and extending lengthwise of the shell are manifolds19 The furnace 7 includes a cylindricalshell- Pipe 22 is used for supplying steam to the manifolds 19 and 19 while pipe serves to supplyair to said manifolds, and in pipe 22 there is provided a valve 24 for controllmg the supplyof steam, and in pipe 25 a valve 26 for controlling the supply of air.
In the branches 20 are valves 20 and obviously by closingone ofthe valves 20', for example, the valve 20 connected with the branch 20 leading from the manifold 19, the mixture of steam and air will be direct ed to the manifold 19, and pass from said man fold 19 through the branches 19a thereof intothe furnace fortreating the copper contents of the furnace in a manner and for a purpose apparent to those skilled in the art. It will thus be-seen that steamcan be admitted to the furnace from either side thereof, so that one side of the furnace may be in operation while the other side is idle with the result that while the side in operation burns out, the other or idle side is built up and will be ready for use when desired.
As shown in Figure 3, the shell 8 of the V furnace is lined with a refractory material 28 to withstand the heat produced by the type.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the copper or other material may be placed in the furnace through the opening 90 9 and by opening the valves 24,25, and one ofthe valves 20, steam and air may be admitted to the furnace from one side thereof, the steam and heat from the burner 29 being used to properly treat the copper whilevthe I air is used to bring back oversteamed copper to normal condition.
hen the treatment of copper or other material has been completed, the furnace may be dumped by rotating the shaft 17 which is 5 burner 29, which is preferably of the oil-feed 7 geared to the furnace shell 8 in a manner hereinbefore specifically stated.
Even though I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is susceptible of further changes, modifications, and improvements coming within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A metal treating apparatus of the character described comprising a horizontally disposed cylinder provided with an opening in the top thereof, manifolds mounted on the cylinder at relatively opposite sides thereof, each manifold having a series of spaced branches extending therefrom and terminating inwardly of the cylinder, steam and air pipes each provided with a valve, a T-fitting connecting said steam and air pipes, and conduit means connecting said T-fitting With said manifolds and including a universal joint.
2. A metal treating apparatus of the character described comprising a horizontally disposed cylinder provided with an opening in the top thereof, manifolds mounted on the cylinder at relatively opposite sides thereof, each manifold having a series of spaced branches extending therefrom and terminating inwardly of the cylinder, steam and air pipes each provided with a valve, a T-fitting connecting said steam and air pipes, and conduit means connecting said T-fitting with said manifolds and including a universal joint, said conduit means also including a pair of valves arranged at relatively opposite sides of the universal joint, there being one of such valves for each manifold, and a burner nozzle projecting into said cylinder and located in a plane above said manifolds.
In testimony whereof I afl'ix my signature.
WILLIS J. BENSON.
