Abstract

811,298. Making metal sheets. HUTTENWERK OBERHAUSEN A.G. April 7, 1955 [April 24, 1954], No. 10288/55. Class 83 (2). In a process for the continuous finishing of metal sheets, particularly of iron or steel, the sheets are moved on a roller conveyer 9 to head shears 2 where the rough ends are trimmed, then to a preliminary flattening machine 3 where they are flattened and freed from scale, thereafter the sheets are tested for internal defects on an ultrasonic testing machine 4, the nominal or desired dimensions are then marked on the sheets in accordance with the results of the ultrasonic testing so as to avoid the defective parts and the sheets are cut to size. The latter operation is effected on a second shearing machine 7. After the preliminary flattening the sheets are inspected for surface defects and unsatisfactory sheets are deviated along a branch conveyer 5 to a repair position 6 and after repairing are returned to the main conveyer. A further flattening operation may then be provided on a machine 8. If the sheets have been rolled from cast billets in the longitudinal direction of the billet axis, they are initially trimmed along their edges by edge shears 1; if the sheets have been rolled transversely of the billet axis they may be roughly trimmed along their edges by the shears 1 and the edges are cut to final size by second edge shears disposed before the shears 7. Rough rolled slabs cut to size by oxy-acetylene cutters may be used in the latter case. Blowers 3a are provided by removing the scale. The ultrasonic testing machine may provide a record of the defective parts of the sheet.
