Abstract

1,070,962. Ultrasonic inspection devices. VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISENUND STAHLWERKE A.G. May 27, 1964 [May 27, 1963], No. 21981/64. Heading H4D. In an ultrasonic flaw-detection apparatus for testing slabs 13 or other flat objects moving along a roller way 9, a row of probes 5 is mounted such that the probes can be quickly moved into or out of contact with the upper face of each slab as it passes the testing station. The probes are mounted on pivoting levers 3 attached to a carrier 2, the carrier being pivoted on a supporting frame 1 above the roller way 9. A sloping surface or edge 11 on the carrier 2 engages the leading edge of each slab and adjusts the position of the carrier 2 according to slab thickness. The probes 5 are then lowered into contact with the slab by pneumatic cylinders 10, and at the same time valves 7 open to supply a coupling fluid, such as water, to the probes 5 from a reservoir 8. The trailing edge of the slab sides off a second sloping surface or edge 12 on the carrier 2 and the valves 7 close until the arrival of the next slab. The carrier 2 may be raised clear of the roller way 9 by a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder 4.
