Abstract
811,233. Igniter for rocket motors. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 7, 1957 [July 24, 1956], No. 22914/56. Classes 9(1) and 9(2) An ignition device (17) for firing the igniter of the propellant in a rocket motor has a metal casing 1 with a flange 2 provided with tommy-bar holes 3, the casing being closed at one end by cold-setting resin 4 in which two ventless delay electric initiators 5 are embedded. The lead wires 6 from the initiators are connected in series to wires 7 taken through a sealing cap 8. The initiators extend into a charge 9 of granular black powder, which is in contact with black powder pellets 10 held in position by a celluloid cap 11. A metal cap 12 excludes moisture from the casing 1 during storage and is removed before screwing the device 17 into the exhaust outlet of a rocket 13. On firing the device 17, the pellets 10 are propelled along a tube 16 and through the axial passage in the propellant 14 at the end of which is an igniter 15. The igniter 15 is then initiated and in turn ignites the charge 14. The initiators 5 may be as described in Specification 773,717. Specification 725,994 also is referred to.
