Abstract

810,662. Supplying fuel to burners. BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO. Ltd. Jan. 29, 1957 [Feb. 21, 1956], No. 5392/56. Class 75(1) [Also in Group XXVI] Fuel oil is alternately supplied to two areas of a burner through the operation of a pivoted deflector plate 11, Fig. 1, which is intermittently actuated by a heat operated motor comprising an air-tight assembly having chambers 1, 2, 3. The assembly is partially filled with water, &c. and is mounted on a pivot 4 so that the chambers may alternately contact a hot-plate 5 which heats and vaporizes the liquid within the chamber in contact at any given time. An ensuing see-saw motion is caused by the repeated vapour transfers and condensation. An adjustably secured weight 8 accelerates the assembly movement in both directions once dead centre has been passed. Each burner area has a fuel inlet pipe, either 16 or 17, and oil flowing into a chamber 10 is diverted to one or the other in dependence upon the position of the plate 11. The hot-plate may be heated by conduction or radiation from the burner. In another motor, the hot plate 18, Fig. 3,-alternately heats and expands metallic bellows 19, 20, carried by a pivoted member 23. An arm-andspring assembly 25, 28, 29, form a toggle mechanism which imparts a snap action to the movement of the member 23. By adjusting the mechanism, or varying the mass of the bellows, or changing the contact areas between the bellows and the hotplate the interval between each see-saw movement of the member 23 may be altered. In a further motor a member 34, Fig. 4, is axially reciprocable between hotplates 37, 38, by the expansion of metallic bellows 30, 31. The member 34 is carried by bearings 35, 36 and a toggle mechanism 39, 40 gives a snap action to the assembly's movement. Bellows 19, 20, 30, 31, may be replaced by bi-metallic elements.
