Abstract

810,174. Tempering glassware. GLACES DE BOUSSOIS. March 11, 1957 [March 17, 1956], No. 7937/57. Drawings to Specifications. Class 56. In the tempering of glassware, which may be hollow articles or flat or curved sheets, wherein the glassware is rapidly cooled after being preliminarily heated, the edges of the glassware are screened during such heating so that at the end thereof they are at a temperature that is slightly lower than that at which rapid cooling will produce substantial permanent strains in the glass and which is less than that of the portions adjacent the edges. During the rapid cooling the edges solidify while the other portions are still plastic ; subsequent solidification of these portions develops permanent compression strains, parallel to the edge, in the edge throughout its entire thickness.
