Abstract

Polyethylene articles or films are coated with a resinous tripolymer of vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile and a functionally basic ethenoid monomer by sulphonating the surface of the polyethylene and subsequently applying a layer of the resinous tripolymer over the sulphonated surface. The sulphonating agent may be concentrated (at least 98 per cent) sulphuric acid, oleum, an anhydrous solution of oleum, e.g. in acetic anhydride, or free sulphur trioxide vapour which may be diluted with an inert gas e.g. nitrogen. The functionally basic ethenoid monomer may be 2-vinyl-pyridine, 4 - vinyl - pyridine, 2 - methyl - 5 - vinyl - pyridine, N - dimethylamino - ethyl acrylate, or 2-morpholino-ethyl acrylate. The tripolymer may be applied in solution in a solvent such as acetone, by spreading, brushing, dipping or spraying. It may thereafter be cured.
