Abstract

809,851. Motor vehicle axles. MASSEY-HARRIS-FERGUSON (SALES) Ltd. May 27, 1955 [May 28, 1954], No. 15872/54. Class 79(4) In a tractor having each half axle supported by inner and outer bearings in a rear axle casing 20, Fig. 3, there is provided a structure having at its outer end a bearing 45 for an extension 40 of the half axle, the structure being rigidly attached to the tractor frame at two places, one of which being on the axle casing. As further shown in Fig. 3 the axle casings 20 are secured to a differential housing 17, and each casing has a flat surface 30. The extension 40 is secured at 41 to the half axle and carries the hub 42 of a wheel 12. The shaft 40 is supported by the bearing 45 in a casing 46 depending from a tubular member 47, which is provided with a dependent arm 49 bolted to the surface 30 and with a plate 52 bolted to the junction of the casings 17, 20. The arm 49 may be dimensional short so that when bolted to the surface 30 a more desirable stress distribution is obtained. In a modification, Fig. 5, the casing 46 of the bearing 45 is bolted to plates 63 depending from a pair of tubes 60 having depending members 61, 62 bolted to the surface 30 and to a flange 20a on the axle casing, the tubes 60 passing on either side of a brake drum 23 and the bolts 64 between the casing 46 and plates 63 having eccentric sleeves to preload the axle. The tubes 47, 60 may be used for mounting an implement.
