Abstract

809,499. Compressors. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Aug. 29, 1957 [Sept. 17, 1956], No. 27213/57. Class 8(1). [Also in Groups XXVI, XXXII and XXXIV] A reciprocatory-type compressor comprises a connecting rod 100 having an integral cupshaped socket 96 at one end for receiving the crank pin 92 of the crankshaft 74. As described, the compressor is incorporated in a closed air suspension of a vehicle and is mounted for belt-drive of the crankshaft from the electrical generator 25, Fig. 2, of the vehicle. The cast aluminium body 32 of the compressor comprises a ribbed cylinder 34 with sintered iron liner 42, crank-case 36 and oil reservoir 38. The crankshaft 74 is carried in bearings 76, 78 in a support 60 secured to the open side face 58 of the crank-case 36. The connecting rod 100 is of cast aluminium and has sintered bronze bearing 106 for a gudgeon pin 108 press-fitted in a piston 114. A reed valve 134 controls an intake port 132 in the top of the piston in accordance with pressure differential on opposite sides of the latter. A second such valve 52 similarly controls an outlet port 50 in the cylinder head 48. A gravity-feed lubrication system comprises passages 148, 150, Fig. 6, leading from the oil reservoir 38 to the annular space 70 around the crankshaft 74 and thence by passages 154, 158, 164 to the hollow interior of the crank pin 92 ; radial passages 168 in this pin lead to a circumferential groove 170 and thence through a longitudinal bore 172 in the connecting rod to the gudgeon pin bearing 106. The intake 22, Fig. 2, and outlet 50 of the compressor are connected, respectively, with low pressure and high pressure tanks which are connected through valves with the air springs of the vehicle. It is arranged that, once the air system has been filled, the compressor transfers air from the pressure in this tank at the desired level; when this pressure is reached, the compressor continues to function mechanically without passing air to the tank until the pressure falls below the desired level.
