Abstract
809,100. Flexible pipes. SOC. NOUVELLE DE TUYAUX FLEXIBLES ET DE FORGE, S.N.T.F.-ELECTROFORGE. April 15, 1957 [April 20, 1956], No. 12191/57. Class 99(2). A circularly woven textile structure incorporating a metallic reinforcement 3 in the form of a helical weft is coated with a cellular foam 4 having closed cells, the outer surface 5 being smooth and continuous and the coating adhering to the structure through the medium of burst open cells and not through a continuous layer of closed cells. The textile structure is composed of longitudinal warp threads 1 and helical weft threads 2 and may be of cotton, hemp, jute or glass. The reinforcement 3 may alternate with the weft 2 and may consist of iron, steel, brass or aluminium wire which is rustless or plated to prevent rusting. The coating 4 is a thick, cellular foam layer of natural or synthetic rubber, a derivative of synthetic rubber, polyvinyl chloride or other synthetic resin which is applied by dipping the textile structure in a coating bath or by spraying. Preferably, the coating 4 is extended at 7 around the end faces of the pipe and at 8 along the inner surface of the structure 1,2 and is approximately 3 millimetres in radial thickness for a pipe having an outside diameter of 75-80 millimetres. The bursting of the cells of the coating in contact with the structure 1, 2 is dependent upon the surface tension of the coating liquid, its wettability and the roughness of the textile structure. The finished pipe is stated to be fluid-tight and insulated against heat and sound transmission and may be used for air-conditioning pipes in motor vehicles and living quarters and to withstand temperatures from-40‹C. to 150‹C.
