Abstract
The invention comprises tropeine derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0808926/IV (b)/1> wherein X represents halogen, and the preparation thereof by (a) reacting dl-tropyltropine with a p-phenylbenzyl halide, or (b) reacting the quaternary compound formed from tropanol and a p-phenylbenzyl halide with a dl-O-acyltropic acid halide and then removing the O-acyl group from the product. In examples: (1) dl-tropyltropine is warmed with p-phenylbenzyl bromide in acetone; (2) trans-tropanol is warmed with p-phenylbenzyl bromide in acetone, the product is heated with O-acetyl-dl-tropic acid bromide, and the acetyl group is then removed by boiling with hydrobromic acid. The products are useful for therapeutic purposes on account of their combination of ganglion-blocking and parasympatholytic properties.
