Abstract
Aluminium trialkyls, containing 12 or more carbon atoms in the molecule are prepared by contacting ethylene at elevated temperatures and pressures with an aluminium trialkyl, containing at least one branched chain alkyl radical having a C1 to C4 alkyl radical attached to the b -carbon atom thereof. The higher molecular weight aluminium alkyls are oxidized by contacting them with an oxygen-containing gas, preferably air, to give the corresponding aluminium alcoholates which are hydrolysed to the corresponding alcohols. The aluminium trialkyl used as starting material may be reacted with ethylene at temperatures, for example, of from 80 DEG to 125 DEG C. and pressures of 200 to 5000 p.s.i.g. The aluminium trialkyls so obtained are oxidized preferably by bubbling an oxygen-containing gas at 0 to 500 p.s.i.g. and 0-90 DEG C. through them to give the corresponding alcoholates. The aluminium alcoholates may be diluted with a liquid paraffin such as n-hexane or heptane or an aromatic hydrocarbon such as benzene or toluene before submitting them to hydrolysis by treating them with an aqueous solution of HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, NaOH, KOH or of an organic acid or base or with steam at elevated temperatures. In the example ethylene is pumped into aluminium tri-isobutyl and the mixture is maintained at elevated temperature and pressure for 3 1/2 hours; the aluminium trialkyl product is then oxidized by bubbling air through at 80 DEG C.; the aluminium alcoholate so obtained is diluted with n-hexane and treated with dilute hydrochloric acid to give straight-chain alcohols, mainly C10 to C14 with some lower alcohols.
