Abstract

807,854. Vehicle power steering. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd., KIRK, W. A. and FLEWELLEN, H. E. G. March 19,1956 [March 18,1955], No. 7996/55. Class 79(5) In a power assisted steering mechanism of the kind in which initial movement of the drop arm in response to rotation of the steering wheel results in a valve being actuated to supply fluid pressure to the power assistance actuator, the valve being operable by a first lever coupled through a lost motion connection to a second lever constituted by the drop arm or operable thereby, a mechanical damping device comprising a rubber body is interposed in the lost motion connection to oppose the taking up of the lost motion. As shown in Fig. 1, a lever 22 has a fixed pivot at its left-band end (not shown), at 24 to a lever 23 to a link (not shown) connected to a double acting piston not shown). The lever 23 is pivoted at its left-hand end (not shown) to valve operating mechanism, and at 27 to a link (not shown) connected to the drop arm (not shown). The pivot 24 carries a ball 25 connected to a drag link (not shown) and the lever 23 has a boss 26 extending through an oversized aperture in the lever 22 to provide the lost motion connection. In order to prevent road shocks causing valve actuation, the boss 26 carries a rubber ring 30 in a recess 29 in the lever 22. In a modification, Fig. 3, a ring 31 engaging the oversized aperture in the lever 22 carries lugs 32 on a diameter at right angles to the relative movement between the levers causing valve actuation. Arranged on both sides of the diameter and engaging the boss 26 are spacers 34 having a radial clearance 35 from the ring 31. Disposed between the ring and the spacers are resilient blocks 33, the lugs 32 serving to permit one block 33 to be compressed on reception of road shocks and the other block being captive. A cylindrical coaxial bore in the boss 26 accommodates the extension of the ball joint 27.
