807,785. Photo-electric inspecting apparatus. CAPITANI, F. DE. May 24, 1955 [Dec. 30, 1954], No. 14920/55. Class 40 (3). A photoelectric device for inspecting cigarettes having two colours, e.g. having an ignition member of one colour and a striking member of another colour, both members being exposed through an opening in a cigarette paper wrapper of a third colour, comprises a source of illumination, photo-electric means receiving light reflected from the cigarettes and differently responsive to at least two different colours on the cigarettes, means for periodically generating electrical impulses, and means for ejecting faulty cigarettes controlled by means comparing said impulses with the response of the photo-electric means. Fig. 2 shows a tube 10 through which a cigarette rod passes, being cut to the correct lengths at H. The rod is provided at intervals with ignition members C, cut in two at H to provide each cigarette A with an ignition piece. The cross-section of Fig. 3 shows a light 28 illuminating the rod through a lens 26, prism 24, and mirror 20, the latter allowing light reflected from the cigarette rod to pass through it and fall on to a photo-cell 30. The output of the latter has a series of peaks, corresponding to the passage of each member C past the mirror 20. This output is compared with that of a generator synchronized with the speed of the rod, and generating peak impulses corresponding to those produced by the photo-cell when the cigarettes are correctly made, so that the output of a comparison device is zero. Imperfections in the cigarettes which involve the colour, e.g. incorrect positioning of member C, torn paper exposing tobacco, or incorrect positioning of a coloured Trade Mark, cause discrepancies between the photo-cell output and the generator output, these being detected by the comparison device and caused to operate a solenoid 16, Fig. 2, which moves tube 10 to deliver into a container P<SP>1</SP> instead of a container P, thus rejecting faulty cigarettes.
