Abstract
807,651. Pneumatic tyres. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. Nov. 23, 1955 [March 4, 1955], No. 33560/55. Class 144 (2). In a tubeless tyre and wheel rim assembly an annular safety diaphragm 11, having radially inner edges airtightly anchored with the beads 6, 7 of the tubless tyre 1, comprises a wall of extensible material which normally divides the tyre into radially inner and outer chambers and which can expand at least into contact with the inner surface of the tyre on blowout of the outer chamber, means such as a flutter valve 14 being provided in the diaphragm to control passage of air between the chambers. The diaphragm may be made of vulcanized natural or synthetic rubber, or of a suitable plastic material. As shown, the diaphragm is shaped to embrace the tyre beads so that its edges are clamped between the beads and the wheel rim flanges 12, 13. When made of nylon or like plastic material the diaphragm edges may be perforated, embossed or rubber coated, to provide a better seal with the rim and tyre beads, and to prevent slip. The diaphragm may be built as a flat band, or shaped on a former, or injection or transfer moulded. The Specification contains examples of suitable rubber and plastic compositions for the diaphragm.
