In changing the wire-cloth of a Fourdrinier paper-making machine, preliminary operations are effected whilst the machine is still working, i.e. the reeling-off brackets are assembled in the tending aisle alongside the machine, the wire is draped about service poles 34 in sockets 33 on standards 28, 36, floor plates are taken up to expose rails 23 on which run carriages 20 for the standards 28 and 36. Carriages 37 intermediate of the carriages 20 may run on rails 39 which may be removably laid on the floor. The machine is then stopped, the old wire is taken out, and superstructures, e.g. the dandy roll, are removed, the breast roll 4 is retracted (from the dotted to the full-line position illustrated) by hydraulic jacks 13, the couch roll 6 and return roll 37 are cantilevered, telescopic beams 60 are extended hydraulically or pneumatically and jack-posts 9 are lowered, rolls 14 are raised. The carriages 20 and 37 are then clamped to their drive-chains 52 which are coupled to a common shaft 51 driven by a motor 50. When the carriages reach the end of their travel, the jack-posts 9 are raised, the telescopic beams are retracted, poles are removed, carriages are withdrawn, tracks are covered by floor-plates, or taken up, the machine rolls &c. are returned to their operative positions, and service connections are re-made.
