Abstract

806,223. Limiting circuits. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Nov. 7,1955 [Nov. 10, 1954], No. 31755/55. Class 40 (6). In a circuit, Fig. 1, in which the output of an amplifier 21 is in phase with an input signal from source 1, a diode 29 is connected between a point 27 having a potential variation equal to or less than that of the input signal and the input to the amplifier. By employing a further diode 23 the output from the amplifier continues to fall with an increasingly negative input signal until diode 23 conducts whereupon diode 29 also conducts. If the amplifier has a gain of unity then the potential divider comprising resistors 25, 26 may be omitted. In a practical embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), a cathode follower is used and by the use of a further pair of diodes, Fig. 5 (not shown), the input signal may also be limited in a positive direction. A circuit for limiting the input in both positive and negative directions, Fig. 6, comprises a cathode follower 3 with a potential divider of resistors 66, 67 and 16. The point 17 is given such a potential that with an input signal of minus 34 volts diode 8 conducts, the output then being such that diode 14 also conducts to limit any further negative excursion. In a similar manner when a positive going signal of ten volts exists at the input, diodes 9, 15 conduct to prevent the output from rising further. The circuit may be employed to clip a large amplitude wave, Fig. 4 (not shown).
