Abstract

1,089,339. Transistor mixing circuits. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 2, 1964 [Nov. 5, 1963], No. 44547/64. Heading H3T. A multiplicative mixing circuit comprising two transistors T 1 , T 2 has a first signal source, having an impedance which is low. relative to the input impedance between the base electrodes, connected between the base electrodes and a second signal source, having an impedance which is high relative to the input impedance at the emitter electrodes, connected to the emitter electrodes which are interconnected for signal purposes such that the mixing product is obtained from at least one of the collector circuits of the transistors. Fig. 2 shows a self-oscillating mixer, in which input signals from L 1 pass to the base electrodes and an oscillator output from L 2 , is applied to the emitter electrodes via capacitor C 8 and resistor R 6 . The I.F. output is obtained from L 4 . The amplification of the mixer stage can be controlled by an A.G.C. voltage U R applied at AB to the base of T 2 . Negative feedback is provided by resistors R 3 , R 4 which together with R 5 and potential divider R 1 , R 2 provide the working point for the transistors. The oscillator coil L 2 may have a separate primary and secondary winding and a diode (D) may be connected to this coil to limit the amplitude of oscillation of the oscillator output to limit distortion (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown). Alternatively a separate oscillator may be used. Also the mixer could be used for amplitude modulation or measuring purposes.
