Abstract

An isoolefin of 4-8 carbon atoms and a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon are copolymerized at a temperature of from - 100 to - 140 DEG F. in the presence of an inert diluent and a FriedelCrafts catalyst by effecting the reaction continuously in at least two stages in the first of which the combined concentration of the monomers based on the weight of diluent and monomer is maintained between 20 and 35 weight per cent whilst in the second and succeeding stages additional diluent is added. The process is effected in two or more reactors joined in series. In an example, isobutylene is copolymerized with styrene in the presence of aluminium chloride utilizing methyl chloride as the diluent.
