Class 120(2) A pin winding machine for forming successive conical layers of yarn comprises a reciprocating guide rod having a plurality of grooves for the yarn side by side along it, a traverse shifting slide adapted to transfer the yarn from one groove to an adjacent groove on movement of the slider means for moving the slide independent of the rotation of the pirn and means for controlling that movement in accordance with the diameter of the pirn. Yarn is laid on a pirn 7 rotating with a driven spindle 1, by a rod 11 having grooves 12 which is traversed by rods connected to a follower 24 in a groove 23 of a drum 22 driven by gearing 20, 19, 18, 17 from a belt drive 3 which also drives the spindle 1. The yarn F, Fig. 2, passes through a slot 40 in a slide 27, movable on rails 25, 26 to which is pivoted a lever 28 carrying at one end a feeler 30 pressed by the action of a spring 31 against the pirn 7, and at the other end a set screw 33 whose end 34 is shaped to engage the serrations of a rack 35, inclined at one end to form the conical base 44 of the pirn. When the diameter of the pirn 7 is sufficient to pivot the lever 28 to remove the screw 33 from engagement with the rack 35, a counterweight 36 pulls the slide 27 until the reduction in diameter causes the screw to re-engage the rack. At the same time, the yarn F passes over an edge of the slide 27 inclined to the pirn axis and is so caused to move from one groove 12 of the rod 11 into an adjacent one. In a modification, the feeler 30 is replaced by a roller, and the screw 33 has at its end a magnet which normally maintains contact with a 'bar of magnetically permeable material but is moved out of contact by increased pirn diameter and regains contact when the air gap is lessened due to the roller moving along the pirn axis under the action of the counterweight. In this modification, the grooved rod is of square section. The counterweight 36 may be replaced by a spring, and an electromagnet may replace the permanent magnet of the second modification, or the bar itself may be made magnetic. When electromagnets are used, the feeler may actuate a switch to control the curent feed to the magnet.
