Abstract

805,537. Fluid-pressure servomotor control systems; valves. SHORT BROS. & HARLAND Ltd. Oct. 9, 1956 [July 13, 1955], No. 20280/55. Class 135. In a servo mechanism comprising an hydraulic actuator and a piston-type control valve controlled by electrical signals through the agency of a transducer to displace the control valve to actuate the output member of the actuator in correspondence with the electrical signals, the transducer comprises a housing 19, Fig. 2, mounting between its two halves in resilient gaskets, a diaphragm 18 of magnetic material coacting on its opposite faces with polepieces 20, each of which carries a driving coil 21 energized by an amplifier to which electric signals are fed. Each polepiece is formed with a projecting nozzle 23 connected by a duct 24 to ducts 25, 26, Fig. 3, connected respectively through restrictions 25A, 27 to a pressure liquid supply inlet 13 and one end of the plunger 11 of the control valve. The control valve includes a port 32 connected to the supply inlet 13, ports 33 connected to opposite ends of the actuator and ports 29 leading to the interior of the housing 19 on opposite sides of the diaphragm 18, so that on movement of the control valve to admit pressure liquid to one end of the actuator 10 and expel it from its other end the expelled liquid acts on the diaphragm in opposition to the applied electrical force to produce hydraulic feed-back before being finally exhausted through one or other of restricted outlets 30. A member 17 connected to the output member of the actuator is associated with a potentiometer 16 which feeds back into the amplifier electrical signals of an opposite sense to those originally received to produce electrical feed-back. For operating a single-acting actuator one of the polepieces and associated nozzle may be dispensed with and replaced by a dummy housing and the control valve biased, e.g. by a spring against hydraulic pressure exerted on it from the duct leading to the nozzle of the remaining polepiece.
