Abstract

805,350. Joint-making packing. NEW YORK AIR BRAKE CO. May 20, 1957 [July 18, 1956], No. 15902/57. Class 122 (3). The cross-section of a hollow sealing ring 5 of resilient metal, when the ring is unstressed, is elliptical or substantially elliptical with the major axis AB lying in an imaginary right-circular core coaxial with the ring. The ring is shown in Fig. 2 as mounted in an annular space between cylindrical surfaces 7, 8 of such width that the ring has been twisted so that the major axes of the cross-section approaches parallelism with the axis of the ring and sealing is effected at the points 9, 11. The same ring is shown in Fig. 3 mounted between surfaces 12, 13, which may be in place or slightly conical, sealing then being effected at the points 15, 16. The ring may be filled with liquid to prevent collapse.
