Abstract

805,338. Switches retained set and freed mechanically HOLLINS, J. R. May 15, 1956 [Oct. 19, 1955], No. 15112/56. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXXVIII] A switch assembly for flashing lights on vehicles (see Group XXXVIII) comprises a combination of a pivoted operating lever for selectively energizing lamps on one side of a vehicle with a rectilinearly moving operating member for simultaneously energizing lamps on both sides of the vehicle, characterized in that the rectilinearly moving operating member is biased to its ineffective position and when operated with the pivoted operating lever in its neutral position is latched until the pivoted lever is moved to a selected side whereupon the latch means is released. The switch assembly comprises a housing 15 with covers 11, 12. The base 15 carries screws 18 for tightening a strap 14 whereby the switch is secured to the vehicle steering column. An operating lever 40 is pivoted by means of trunnions 22 and 68 and carries an indicator lamp PIL opposite an aperture 70 to illuminate one of three coloured lenses 65 according to whether the lever 40 is in its neutral position or moved to either side thereof. A spring 31 urges a cam 20 to engage notches 71 and releasably latch the lever 40 in its selected position. Two rectilinearly movable contact-carrying members 90 engaging flush contacts in an insulating plate 30 (Fig. 2) are urged against wall 27 of housing 15 by springs 92. Each member 90 has an upstanding abutment 110 projecting through a slot 33 in housing 15 (Fig. 1). When lever 40 is moved to either side of its neutral position shown, one of the wings 75 thereon engages one abutment 110 to move one of the members 90 to its operated position, compressing the associated spring 92. A second operating member 50, shaped as shown in Fig. 8, is rectilinearly movable as indicated by the arrows in Figs. 1 and 2. When operator 50 is pulled outwardly both contact-carrying members 90 are moved to their operated positions by ears 80 engaging abutments 110, and the operator 50 is latched in this position by the tip 82 of a leaf-spring 85 which rides over a lip 73 on lever 40. When lever 40 is moved to either side of its neutral position the lip 73 moves away from spring tip 82 and allows operator 50 to return to its " off " position under action of the two springs 92 pressing on members 90. Specification 680,550 is referred to.
