Abstract
805,023. Toothed gearing. FAIRCHILD ENGINE & AIRPLANE CORPORATION. Jan. 24, 1957 [Jan. 25, 1956], No. 2676/57. Class 80 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] A casing having a main driving shaft with an annular passage around the shaft for the flow of a fluid and auxiliary shaft disposed radially outside the casing for driving an accessory mechanism has the auxiliary shaft driven from the main shaft through an epicyclic gear train including a rotatable annulus having an outer and an inner ring of gear teeth, which rings are connected together by radial support members over which the working fluid flows. An axial flow compressor forming part of a gas turbine plant has a casing 10 to the front end of which is attached an annular casing 12 which supports an accessory drive housing 13. A disc 40 on the front end of the compressor rotor 11 has a forwardly extending shaft 14 which supports a disc 16 carrying a first stage row of compressor blades 17. The shaft 14 is supported in the casings 10, 12 by a bearing 44 mounted in a hub 45 attached to an outer stator shroud 47 by stator blades 46. The accessories are driven from the shaft 14 through an epicyclic gear train comprising a stationary sun-wheel 30, compound planet wheels 33, 35, a driving sun wheel 32 mounted on the shaft 14 and a rotating annulus consisting of an outer ring of gear teeth 22 and an inner ring of gear teeth 25 connected by blades 19. The rotating wheel 32 and the stationary wheel 30 cause the housing 28 enclosing the compound planet wheels 33, 35 to rotate about the axis of the shaft 14. The pinion 33 also rotates about its own axis and drives the inner ring of gear teeth of 25. The outer ring of gear teeth 22 drives the gearwheel 23 mounted on a shaft 24 in the housing 13. The epicyclic reduction gear train is lubricated through a port 52 in the casing 12, a hollow stator blade 46 and a tube 54. The oil is drained away through holes 59, hollow blades 19 and drain holes 60 to a chamber 61.
