The shank of a transfer needle is reduced in crosssection in the region 6 where it is required to flex laterally in such manner as to maintain the full thickness at its front edge 1a. A loop spreading swelling 7 for guiding the end of a co-operative needle may be provided ; alternatively the needle may be recessed as at 10, Fig. 4, so as to preserve the full thickness of the edge 1a and to guide the co-operating needle.
