Abstract
804,572. Thermionic valves. EITEL-Mc- CULLOUGH, Inc. Aug. 2, 1955 [March 8, 1955], No. 22147/55. Class 39(1). Electric discharge tube comprises a generally cylindrical envelope including a stack of metallized ceramic rings 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 with flat metal rings 8, 9, 11, 12 sandwiched therebetween and metallic bonds uniting the ceramic and metal rings, a copper anode 13 forming part of the envelope, cathode 21 and grids 22, 23 coaxial with the envelope, sheet metal tubular electrode supports 28, 26, 24 integral with the metal rings, and a plurality of outwardly extending contact tabs 36 on each metal ring to provide electrode terminals. The ceramic rings are preferably of alumina, and are metallized by a molybdenum-manganese powder sintering process. The metal rings are preferably of copper about 0À020 inch thick. The ceramic and metal rings are brazed together with high-temperature brazing alloys such as copper-gold. The heater 29 for the cathode 21 is connected at one end to a rod 32 connected to a conical portion 33 integral with the metal ring 8 and is connected at the other end to a rod 31 coaxial with the envelope and brazed to a conically shaped metal bottom wall 34 of the envelope brazed to the metallized end of the ceramic ring 2. The copper anode 13 carries the exhaust tubulation 18 and a finned cooler 19 and is supported on the ceramic ring 7 and secured by the sealing flanges 14 and 16 brazed together at 17, the flange 14 being brazed to the anode and the flange 16 to the metallized ceramic ring 7. A socket member 38 has a recess for receiving the end portion of the discharge tube and a series of contacts 37 on metal rings 41 fixed to the socket members, projecting into the recess and spaced in parallel planes for engagement by the contact tabs 36 under the action of the spring-pressed pin 47 which also provides a contact for the metallic base 34 of the tube connected to the heater support rod 31. The socket contacts 37 are provided with integral terminal lugs 42. The end portion 2 of the tube has a guide pin 43 engageable with a vertical indexing groove 44 in the socket recess, a horizontal portion 46 of the groove 44 allowing the tube to be rotated for engagement of the contacts 36 and 37. The socket member 38 forms the subject matter of Divisional Specification 804,573 [Group XXXVI].
