Abstract

804,333. Rotary meters. DEBOW, H. R. A., and KING, R. F. J. April 1, 1955 [April 1, 1954], No. 9599/54. Class 110 (2). [Also in Group XXXVIII] Apparatus for measure quantity or velocity of fluid flow comprises a propeller rotating in the fluid flow and arranged to produce an output pulse each time part of the blade passes a reference point. The propeller is homogeneous with its boss and is made from an unplasticized polymethyl resin formed with an integral hollow spindle into which stainless steel pivots are inserted at the ends. The propeller is suspended for free rotation in jewelled bearings 5 supported at the axis of a polymethyl methacrylate tube 2, by radial fin 6. The tube 2 is supported in a flanged length of pipe by rubber rings 3, but holes are provided so that the flow is not excluded from the space between the rings. A fine conductive probe 8 of material resistant to corrosion by the liquid, e.g. gold, projects to the central tube as does a further probe 11. A third probe 12 enters the liquid surrounding the polymethyl methacrylate tube only. The propeller is so situated that the conductivity of the path between probes 8 and 12 varies each time a blade of the propeller approaches while that between 8 and 11 does not. The probes with intervening liquid, form two arms of a bridge circuit fed with a 10 kc/s. signal and balanced when no blade is near the probes. Thus the bridge output is a 10 kc/s. carrier modulated at a frequency dependent on the speed of rotation of the propeller.
