Abstract

A speed indicating device 12 for a ski 10 or the like is provided which is mounted or adapted to be mounted on the ski 10 or the like, for example on the upper surface of the ski at the rear end thereof. The speed indicating device comprises an air speed sensor and electronic processing means. The sensor may comprise a pilot/static arrangement, a hot wire anemometer or a turbine. Alternatively speed may be determined using an accelerometer. A display unit may be carried by the skier and provide indications of time and distance. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Speed indicating device for a ski or the like This invention relates to a speed indicating device for a ski or the like.
It is among the objects of the invention to provide a speed indicating device for a ski or the like conveyance which, in operation, does not interfere with efficiency of the ski or the like and which does not require the use of reference point fixed relative to the terrain.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a speed indicating device for a ski or the like conveyance, comprising an air-speed sensor adapted to be mounted on the ski or the like, or carried by the skier or person carried by such conveyance in the path of the air flow relative to the ski or the like conveyance when the latter is in motion.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided the combination of a ski with a speed indication device according to the above noted aspect of the invention, the air-speed sensor being mounted on the ski so as to be in the path of the air flow relative to the skier when in motion.
According to yet another aspect of the invention, there is provided a speed indicating device for a ski or the like conveyance comprising an accelerometer adapted to be mounted on a ski or like conveyance, and integration means whereby the measurements of acceleration made by the accelometer may be integrated with respect to time to yield an indication of current velocity.
Embodiments of the invention are described below by way of example with reference to the sole figure of the accompanying drawings which is a perspective view of a snow ski with a speed indicating device embodying the invention mounted thereon.
As shown in the drawing, a speed indicating device for a snow ski 10 includes a unit 12 mounted on its upper surface adjacent the rear end thereof, the unit 12, in the embodiment illustrated, taking the form of a rectangular block with an aperture 14 in its front face communicating with a cavity in the unit.
The unit 12 of the speed indicating device incorporates an air-speed indicator and electronic processing means, for example, including a microprocessor, whereby the signals from the air-speed sensing device can be converted into a speed indication, for example in digital or, if preferred in analogue form on an appropriate display (not shown).
The display may, for example, be provided in a remote unit adapted to be connected with the circuity in the unit 12 mounted on the ski by means of the flexible lead or the like, with the remote display unit being adapted to be carried by the skier.
The air-speed sensor may operate on the Pitot pressure system, and may, for example, incorporate a pressure transducer arranged to sense the pressure difference between the cavity communicating with aperture 14 and a static source (not shown). The cavity in this case may take the form of a blind bore.
Instead of a Pitot system, the air-speed sensor may take the form of a hot-wire anemometer, with the sensing element or wire being disposed within the rectangular block, for protection, in a through passage the entrance to which is formed by the aperture 14.
The air-speed sensor may, alternatively, comprise a turbine mounted within the rectangular casing in a passage extending through the casing from the aperture 14, forming the entrance to said passage to an outlet (not shown), with the rotational speed of the turbine being sensed electrically or electronically.
As the device operates by measuring air-speed, its preferably incorporates means whereby the device may be arranged to take account of the wind speed prevailing so as to provide an indication of ground speed rather than air-speed. In such a case, the skier will normally "zero" the speed indicating device whilst stationery, in which condition the wind speed at the location of the device will correspond with the air speed sensed.
In another, and preferred embodiment, air-speed measurement is dispensed with, and the device 12 incorporates an accelerometer and an electronic, e.g. quartz crystal based, clock, and is arranged to calculate speed by integrating the sensed acceleration with respect to time. The accelerometer preferably operates on the piezo-electric principle, in a manner somewhat analagous to gramaphone pickup heads using this principle, to provide, in a simple and relatively inexpensive manner, an electrical output signal corresponding to acceleration to circuitry in the device 12 to yield the derived speed indication.
In this embodiment, of course, the accelerometer is devised so as to respond only to accelerations and decelerations in the longitudinal direction of the ski.
The device 12 may be arranged to give on demand (for example by appropriate operation of a control button or buttons or the like, on the unit 12 or on the remote unit carried by the skier, where such a remote unit is provided), any of a variety of indications in addition to an indication of instantaneous speed. Indications which may be given on demand, for example, are an indication of average speed over a predetermined period, an indication of maximum speed reached, an indication of distance travelled over a predetermined period, etc. The device may also be arranged to operate as chronograph and stop-watch to give, when required, an indication of time of day, or an indication elapsed time spent skiing, etc. The device may also be arranged, for example, to store previously recorded best speeds, best times, etc and to display such quantities on demand, on operation of the appropriate control.
If desired, the entire device may be arranged to be carried on the skier's body, rather than be mounted on one of the skis or may be mounted at any other appropriate location on the ski.
It will also be appreciated that the use of the device disclosed is not confined specifically to snow skis, but the device may be utilised on other modes of conveyance, such as ice skates, toboggans, water skis, skateboards, etc, or carried by persons carried by such modes of conveyance.
