Abstract

804,270. Making rivets; jointing by stamping. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I. May 6, 1957 [May 7, 1956: July 31, 1956], No. 14299/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXV] An explosive rivet comprises a head 1, Fig. 1a, and a shank 2, the shank having a recess 5 containing an explosive charge 5a, a spacer 6 and a spherical metal plug 7, the free end of the shank being swaged to hold the spacer and plug in position. The rivet is made by clamping the head 1 to a part 10, Fig. 2a, with the shank extending vertically upwards. The charge, spacer and plug are placed successively in the recess and the free end of the shank is chamfered by a die 12. Thereafter the rivet is conveyed to swaging dies 13, 14, Fig. 2b, to secure the charge &c. in the recess. Specification 711,417, [Group XXV], is referred to.
