Abstract
804,007. Axial-flow compressors. BRISTOL AERO-ENGINES, Ltd. Dec. 6, 1956 [Dec. 23, 1955], No. 36978/55. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (3). In a bladed disc-and-drum compressor rotor comprising blade-carrying disc elements and tubular elements connected together to form a disc-and-drum structure, the elements together bound, at least in part, a number of internal chambers in the rotor, at least some of the chambers being substantially sealed from one another internally of the rotor and defined in part each by a different adjacent pair of the elements which are jointed at an interface in flat face-to-face contact with one another around substantially the whole of the periphery of the drum, and at least one of the elements has a slot in its joint face, the slot forming a passage for venting the chamber to the outside of the drum. In the compressor rotor shown in Fig. 1a, the discs 12, 21, 22 ... have abutting flanges 12a, 21a, 21b, 22a, 22b ... and are connected together by bolts 29 passing through holes in the abutting flanges. Slots 74, Figs. 1a and 3, cut in the abutment faces of the abutting flanges, allow the discs to be separated during dismantling by inserting wedge-shaped tools into the slots. Three such slots may be provided equally spaced around each flange, holes 75, Fig. 1a, being provided in spacer rings 35 opposite each slot to enable the tools to be inserted. The holes 75 and slots 74 provide communication between each rotor chamber 70, 71 ... and the working passage of the compressor, so that the pressures in the chambers are graded in accordance with the stageby-stage rise of pressure through the compressor, the unbalanced endwise pressure loading on the discs 21, 22 ... therefore always being towards the inlet end of the rotor. The endwise loads on the discs are transmitted through tubular members 68, 47 and 39, rotor discs 11 and 12, and a spigot 13 to a bearing 14. Slots similar to the slots 74 may be provided in the abutment faces of rotor discs 24, 25 (not shown) and of a labyrinth seal member 76 (not shown) to facilitate separation of those parts. In other respects the rotor is as described in Specification 781,478.
