Abstract

A natural rubber composition is prepared by masticating crude rubber with oil or other softener in an internal mixer in such manner that the oil or other softener is present from the commencement of the mastication in an amount of not less than 10 per cent of the weight of the rubber. Preferably the whole of the oil or other softener is introduced into the internal mixer, together with carbon black and antioxidant, and the rubber added thereto. Prior to its addition the rubber may be milled just sufficiently to form a sheet. The mineral oil may be a naphthenic or aromatic petroleum fraction, and the mastication may be effected in an atmosphere of nitrogen. In an example 25 parts by weight of polymethyl styrene, 50 parts of gas black, and 2 parts of antioxidant are introduced into an internal mixer. There are then added 75 parts natural rubber, 5 parts zinc oxide, and 2 parts stearic acid, and mastication is effected at 150 DEG C. in an atmosphere of nitrogen. After cooling, sulphur and vulcanization accelerator are added in the mixer or on a mill. In other examples the rubber is masticated with (a) mineral oil, (b) liquid paraffin, and (c) mineral oil and hexamethylene tetramine.
