Abstract

In the parent Specification 728,243, a dentifrice comprises a higher aliphatic acyl amide of an amino carboxylic acid wherein the aliphatic group contains from 12 to 18 carbon atoms, and as a polishing agent a mixture of a calcium polyphosphate and hydrated aluminium oxide. Amide compounds in which the acyl group contains from 12 to 18 carbon atoms are contemplated by the invention but preferably a mixture of N-palmitoyl sarcoside and N-lauroyl sarcoside in the ratio by weight of between 5 : 1 and 1 : 1 is used. Suitable water-soluble calcium polyphosphates include calcium pyrophosphate and triphosphate, and examples of hydrated aluminium oxide are a - and b -aluminium oxide tri-hydrate, precipitated aluminium hydroxide and alumina gel. The ratio by weight of the calcium compound and the aluminium compound may vary between 100 : 1 and 1 : 10 and the total percentage of polishing agent in the composition will depend on whether it is a paste, powder, &c.
