Abstract

803,602. Stabilizing fins and hydroplanes. MUIRHEAD & CO., Ltd. Aug. 8, 1957 [Aug. 16, 1956], No. 25061/56. Class 113. A fin or hydroplane comprises a hollow major portion, means to support the major portion for partial rotation about an axis at right-angles to the direction of travel of the ship, at least one telescoping portion adapted to be retracted into the major portion, and means to extend and retract each telescoping portion. In Fig. 1 the hull 1 has a support 2 for the shaft 3 of a stabilizing fin comprising a major portion 4 into which may be telescoped a second portion 5. The fin projects into the angle formed by producing the vertical and horizontal lines 6 and 7, and when the fin is used with the portion 5 telescoped into the portion 4 the whole fin is within the angle bounded by said lines. The major portion may be retracted into a fin box by mechanical or hydraulic means.
