[Also in Groups XX and XL (b)] An optical system comprises an active optical element consisting of gallium phosphide. The element may be used as a lens, prism, filter, semi-permeable reflector or a photo-modulator. Details are given of the values of the absorption constant and refractive index of gallium phosphide showing that absorption is low over a large part of the visible spectrum, down to 0.54 Á. The values are compared with those for a thallium bromide iodide mixed crystal. The absorption characteristic may be varied by injecting charge carriers (electrons or holes) into the material to provide a photo-modulator. Reflection may be reduced by providing a reflection reducing layer on the element.
