Abstract

803,232. Electrostatic switches. ELECTRIC MACHINERY MFG. CO. March 26, 1956, No. 9310/56. Class 38 (5). A relay comprises an electrostrictive element having resilient mounting means at its ends which place it under tension. The element 52 comprises a central electrode 53 and ceramic members 64, 66 having upper and lower electrodes 65, 67, the electrode 53 having openings 54 engaged by spring fingers 56, 57 on members 59 attached to a mounting-piece 60. The centre of member 64 carries a bracket 74 having a lug 77 having an opening in which is loosely engaged a tongue 37 formed on a dead-centre snap spring 29. The latter has shoulders 39 engaging a groove in a fixed member 28 and a compression strip 34 engaging an opposite groove in member 28, the outer arms 33 being in tension. Normally, the ceramic member 66 acts as a reaction member and the application and removal of potential to the opposite electrodes of the member 64 causes the snap spring to snap over between fixed contacts 44, 45. The members 64 and 66 may, however, both be used additively. Specification 803,163, [Group V], is referred to.
