Abstract

Symmetrical dimethyldiphenyldivinyldisiloxane may be made by reacting methylvinyldichlorosilane with a phenyl Grignard reagent to yield methylphenylvinylchlorosilane which is then hydrolysed and subsequently condensed by heating with potassium acetate in refluxing toluene. Casting resins are made by mixing (1) from 5 to 75 per cent (by weight) of the symmetrical siloxane with (2) from 25 to 95 per cent of a polysiloxane in which the polymer units are selected from monovinyl-, phenylvinyl-, monophenyl-, phenylmethyl-, monomethyl- and diphenyl-siloxanes and up to 10 mol. per cent of R3SiO units in which each R is a vinyl, methyl or phenyl radical, in siloxane (2) at least 10 mol. per cent of the units being vinylsiloxane units (i.e. any of the defined units having a vinyl radical), and the phenyl to Si ratio being from 0.25 : 1 to 1.1 : 1. The compositions may also contain fillers, e.g. metal oxides, silica, carbon black, glass fabric, asbestos, glass fibres, glass beads and clay, and may be cured by heating with organic peroxides or other catalysts to effect copolymerization via the vinyl groups in the two siloxanes. Examples are given. Uses.-The compositions may be cast into any desired shape, and may also be used to impregnate coils, transformers, &c., e.g. by vacuum impregnation.
