Class 123(1) The effect of soluble polyphosphates used alone or with the addition of a tannin in reducing scale deposition in boiler economizers. feed tanks, &c., or in cooling water systems is increased by the addition to the water of a soluble magnesium compound such as the chloride nitrate or sulphate, the latter being preferred. The preferred polyphosphate is sodium hexametaphosphate but sodium tripolyphosphate and tetrasodium pyrophosphate may also be used, the polyphosphate concentration being from 0.2 to 5 parts per million. The tannin concentration, if present, is from 2 to 20 parts per million whilst the range of total magnesium compounds in the water expressed in terms of calcium carbonate is adjusted to from 0.10 to 2.0 times the calcium hardness of the water by addition of the soluble magnesium compound.
