Abstract

802,261. Mobile unit for extruding thermoplastic pipes. DUPONT PIPE CO., Ltd. Jan. 5, 1955 [Jan. 7, 1954], No. 502/54. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXVIII] An extrusion unit for pipes of thermoplastic material is housed in a wheeled vehicle and comprises an enclosed conveyer system with heating means for feeding thermoplastic material to an extrusion orifice, cooling means after the extrusion orifice and means whereby hot air at this region is drawn back over the incoming material. As shown, a trailer vehicle 10 carries the extrusion machine. Granulated material is fed through a hopper 37 on to a tray 38 from which it is conveyed by a vibrating screwelevator 39 and vibrating conveyer 40 to feed hopper 41 of extrusion machine 22. The elevator 39 and conveyer 40 are enclosed by metal shrouds 42, 43 respectively and may include infra-red heating means 44, 45. The pipe is extruded through die 23 over a watercooled former 24, hot air from this region being drawn back into shroud 43 through cowl 48 by fan 47. The pipe is then further cooled in a water tank 25 which it enters and leaves through fluid tight seals, such as sheet 59, having apertures in which the pipe is a close fit. The pipe may then be reinforced by winding on it fibre, cord or tape of thermoplastic material, or steel wire coated with thermoplastic material. The reinforcement is carried by bobbins 31 and may be bonded to the pipe and coated by a coldsetting resin, e.g., an epoxy resin. Finally the pipe is cut by a saw 34. The walls 13, 14 of the compartment enclosing the extrusion machine have a heating insulating material filling. The provisional specification describes also the extrusion of the pipe at an angle to the ground and the use of lubricant at the die.
