Abstract

A catalyst for the polymerization of vinyl aromatic compounds comprises a mixture of (a) RMX3, where M is titanium, zirconium or thorium, X is less electro-negative than chlorine and R is an alkoxy group or a halogen atom; and (b) an aluminium dialkyl monochloride and aluminium trialkyl or a mixture of an aluminium trialkyl and aluminium trichloride. Specified catalysts (a) are titanium tetra-ethoxide, tetra-isopropoxide or tetra-tertiary hetoxide, titanium tributyrate monochloride and titanium tribenzoate monochloride. Specification 801,554, [Group IV (a)], is referred to.ALSO:Vinyl-aromatic compounds are polymerized using as catalyst a mixture of (a) and (b), where (a) has the formula RM(X)3 where M is titanium, zirconium or thorium, X is less electronegative than chlorine and R is an alkoxy group or a halogen atom, and (b) is an aluminium dialkyl monochloride, an aluminium trialkyl or a mixture of an aluminium trialkyl and aluminium trichloride. Specified vinyl-aromatic compounds are styrene, o-, m- and p-methyl and ethyl styrenes, alpha and beta methyl styrenes, p-chloro-styrene, p-trichloromethyl styrene, p-methoxy styrene, 2,5-dichlorostyrene, alpha and beta mono-vinyl tetrahydronaphthalene, phenyl and benzyl acrylate and methacrylate and their halogen-substituted derivatives, vinyl benzoate and mixtures thereof. Specified catalysts (a) are titanium tetraethoxide or tetra isopropoxide or tetra-tertiary butoxide, triethoxy titanium chloride, titanium tributyrate monochloride and titanium tribenzoate monochloride, and (b) is diethyl aluminium monochloride. The polymerization is preferably carried out in an inert solvent such as iso-octane, n-hexane, toluene and ethylene dichloride. The vinyl aromatic compound may be added either in bulk or fed continuously to the catalyst suspended in the solvent. Temperatures from 20 DEG to 120 DEG C. may be employed. The catalyst may be removed after polymerization by decomposition with an alcohol such as methanol, ethanol or isopropanol or with aqueous or alcoholic mineral acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid, and the polymer may be freed from catalyst remnants by the use of an aqueous solution of a detergent as described in Specification 801,554 with or without steam-stripping.
