The invention of the parent Specification is modified in that different creping, embossing, stretching, or perforating treatments &c. are given to different longitudinal strips of the web. Some of these strips may be compressed, or roughened on at least one side. Differences in strength, absorptive and swelling capacity may result, and periodic differences in the longitudinal direction may recur in less than 1 cm. There may be a metallic surface, e.g. of foil on at least one side, as by the use of metallized paper, or there may be a fleece covering, e.g. of cotton wadding, or rayon, or a covering or interlayer of a framed carbamide resin, latex or neoprene, or of flakes made from a foamed material.
